High risk areas

6 seafarers abducted off Benin

by Port News Editorial Staff

Pirates captured 6 seafarers who were part of the crew of a Danish fishing vessel. The assault took place off the coast of Cotonou, the capital of Benin. The nationality of the abducted seamen is known: five are South Koreans and one is a Danish.

Gunmen were seen boarding the ship on its way to Nigeria. The South Korean Foreign Ministry is apparently already working to secure the release of the hostages.

The area remains a very high risk one for seafarers. This is the seventh attack since the beginning of the year.

The fishing vessel Panofi Frontier was built in 1987 and has a crew of 30 people on board.
