Congestion problems

79 ships at anchor off San Pedro Bay

by Port News Editorial Staff

The congestion problems which the American ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have been struggling with for some time now, show no sign of diminishing. On the contrary.

The latest data show that at present there are 79 container ships at anchor off San Pedro Bay, i.e. a total of 600,000 TEUs.

And that’s not all. Eighteen more vessels are expected to arrive by the end of the week. On average, ships currently have to wait between 8 to 12 days before they  can be handled at  Long Beach. Things are slightly better at the Los Angeles port of call: it takes between 7  to 10 days to find an available berth.
