A LIFE4MEDECA project initiative

A green future for the Mediterranean

by Port News Editorial Staff

The Port Network Authority, as part of the LIFE4MEDECA project, has organized an international workshop on the future of sustainability in the Mediterranean and European seas.

The event will be held tomorrow, from 9 am to 1pm, at the headquarters of the Representation of the European Commission but can be followed live, after registration on the zoom platform. It will be held in English with the possibility of simultaneous translation (Instructions for registration and connection can be found in the Program).

Highly qualified representatives from European institutions (Parliament, Committee of the Regions), international institutions (United Nations, REMPEC), as well as Italian ambassadors from North African countries, ports and sector experts will be taking  part in the initiative to explore the potential for cooperation at Mediterranean level on the extremely topical issues of decarbonization and sustainable growth in the maritime port sector, laying the foundations for a partnership that will prepare ports for the introduction of the ECA area (i.e., low pollutant emissions) over the next few years.

The workshop intends to explore the effects on Mediterranean ports, the expected environmental benefits and the interventions needed to cope with the new, more stringent requirements in terms of controlling maritime transport emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, highlighting the opportunities arising from closer cooperation between the various port and logistics systems.

The LIFE4MEDECA project, funded by the European Union to support and prepare the creation of the ECA area in the Mediterranean, is coordinated by the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority. It involves partners from European and Mediterranean countries, with additional financial contributions from Italy, France, the Netherlands and Spain, members of the project Advisory Board.
