€50 million contract

Alpha Ventus to be demolished

by Port News Editorial Staff

Today marks the beginning of a complex process that will lead to the decommissioning of Germany’s first offshore wind farm in the medium term. According to Splash247, the Swedish group Vattenfall (specializing in electricity production), the regional energy supplier for the Ems-Weser-Elbe region, EWE AG, and the German renewable energy multinational, RWE, have very recently launched a project to demolish Alpha Ventus, the wind farm located 45 km north of the island of Borkum in the North Sea.

In particular, the three companies announced that they are looking for experienced contractors to carry out the project to remove the component parts of the wind farm, which began operating in 2010.

The contract includes the removal of the wind turbine foundations, the recovery of underwater cables, the dismantling of the offshore substation (upper surface and foundations) and the recycling of all components.

The contract also includes transporting  all 12 wind turbines and wind farm foundations, as well as the offshore substation ashore. The contractor will be responsible for the provision of vessels, equipment, tools and personnel.

Work is scheduled to begin in 2027. The contract is worth approximately €50 million. The deadline for receiving expressions of interest is 16th  December 2025.
