Box freight rates up 12% this week

by Port News Editorial Staff

Container shipping rates are up 12%. Drewry’s latest report shows that freight rates reached an average of $2,182 per FEU this week. This is the third consecutive weekly increase.

This positive result was largely due to freight rates on transpacific routes. Rates rebounded sharply after last week’s collapse: from Shanghai to New York, they were up 19% to $3,293/ FEU, while on the Shanghai-Los Angeles route, they rose by 18% to $2,474/FEU.

The routes connecting Asia to Europe, on the other hand, have continued to maintain an upward trend for three weeks now. Shanghai – Genoa freight rates have increased by 10% to $3,314 per FEU, while Shanghai – Rotterdam tariffs are up 8% to $2,539.

Drewry expects further tariff increases over the next few weeks, as carriers’ bookings fill up ahead of the Lunar New Year in February.
