Waterway linking Asia to Europe blocked again

Bulker runs aground in the Suez Canal

by Port News Editorial Staff

This morning a cargo vessel ran aground in the Suez Canal, raising fears of a new blockage of the waterway connecting Asia to Europe, like the one that happened in 2021 when the containership, the Ever Given, ran aground.

Leth Ship Agencies, broke the news on Twitter, identifying the vessel as the 190-metre (623 ft) long bulk carrier, the Xin Hai Tong 23.

The bulker had departed from the port of Dhuba in Saudi Arabia. It is owned by Xiang B12 HK International Ship Lease and managed by Tosco Keymax International Ship Management.

Fortunately, the problem was solved quickly, just two hours after the first distress signals were sent. The Suez Canal Authority reported that it had managed to refloat the ship.

The canal will be back to normal shortly as soon as towing operations have been completed.
