Alphaliner analysis

China leading boxship builder

by Port News Editorial Staff

China consolidates its leadership in the global containership orderbook, with nearly three-quarters of boxship capacity currently secured by Chinese shipbuilders.

According to Alphaliner’s latest data, Beijing shipyards currently have 73.7% of the total capacity ordered under construction, i.e. a total of 7.36 million TEUs.

Next on the podium are South Korea, with a market share of 20.5% and a commissioned capacity of 2.04 million TEUs, and Japan, whose share of the orderbook is 4.3% (0.43 million TEUs).

It is interesting to note that only 29 newbuildings have been awarded to shipyards belonging to nationalities other than the three mentioned above.

Taiwan currently has 16 ships under construction, Turkey another four. The United States and India  wrap up the list  with, respectively, three and two orders being built.
