The EU’s ETS legislation will be fully effective from 2026

Hapag Lloyd, +45% ETS surcharge

by Port News Editorial Staff

Big carriers are preparing for the final implementation of European legislation on the European Trading System (ETS), which, from January 2026, will require shipping companies to surrender emission allowances equivalent to 100% of their verified CO2 emissions.

In a customer notice, Hapag Lloyd announced that it will have to adjust its surcharge to cover the new costs. Basically, customers will be charged a 45% increase.

“We will adjust our existing EU ETS surcharge to reflect the transition to 100% emissions coverage,” the liner announced, stressing that the surcharge will reflect recent increases in emission allowance costs.

“We will continue to keep you informed about upcoming regulatory changes and their impact on your business,” the notice concludes.
