German giant Hapag-Lloyd’s boxship fleet has a total cargo capacity of over 2.4 million TEUs. This is the first important news in Alphaliner’s latest monthly classification list of the world’s top 100 largest shipping companies.
The German liner, in fifth position, operates 303 vessels, 133 of its own (1.42m TEUs) & 170 chartered ones (983 thousand TEUs). Overall, the carrier has 32 newbuildings on order with a total cargo capacity of 393 thousand TEUs and a market share of 7.5%.
Meanwhile, MSC continues to expand, with a fleet of 915 ships and a total capacity of almost 6.6 million TEUs. These include 621 vessels it owns (3.588m TEUs), and 398 chartered ships, (3.010 m TEUs) . Gianluigi Aponte’s group has ordered 129 new boxships, (2.086m TEUs).
In second and third position we find Maersk and CMA CGM, whose fleets respectively represent 13.2% and 12.2% of the global fleet of 7310 vessels, with a total cargo capacity of 32.2 m TEUs.
The Danish carrier has 734 vessels and a capacity of 4.57 m TEUs while the French operator operates 674 vessels, totaling 3.9 m TEUs.
COSCO is currently in fourth position, with 522 ships and a capacity of 3.362 m TEUs
