The conflict between the US and Iran continues to take its toll on merchant ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz. The latest to be hit is the Mayuree Naree, a Thai-flagged cargo ship, which was struck by a projectile while north of Oman. A fire broke out on board following the attack and the crew was evacuated immediately.
The ONE Majesty, a 6,724 TEU boxship flying the Japanese flag, also sustained damage in an attack that left a 10 cm hole in its hull. The vessel subsequently made its way to a safe haven. All crew members have been rescued.
The Kamsarmax bulk carrier Star Gwyneth, owned by Star Bulk (Marshall Islands flag), was also hit northwest of Dubai, sustaining damage to its hull.
In short, the Strait of Hormuz is becoming increasingly dangerous, so much so that US forces have gone back to attacking Iranian ships with even greater frequency. Over the last few hours, 16 mine-laying vessels have been sunk. Trump’s goal is to eliminate any ship that attempts to lay mines in the Strait.
