by Port News Editorial Staff

HUTCHISON Ports has signed a concession contract with the Egyptian Navy to develop a new container terminal at Aug Qir, inside the Abu Qir naval base, 13 km from Alexandria.

The terminal will have a 2 million TEU capacity and will cover 60 hectares in the base plus another 100 hectares reserved for future expansion. The facility will be equipped with a 1200 meter quay, dredged at a depth of 18 meters, which will be connected to the motorway network.

The concession will last 38 years. The cost of the project amounts to $730 million.

The terminal operator already operates two terminals in Egypt, one in Alexandria and another in El Dekheila (7 miles west of the port city).
