MSC, record-breaking 900-vessel fleet

by Port News Editorial Staff

MSC is the first shipowner in the world to have 900 boxships available, reports Alphaliner. Thanks to its new orders, the shipping giant is preparing to acquire a colossal 8.5 mln TEU capacity.

Gianluigi Aponte’s group has 609 containerships it owns and 291 chartered vessels, with a total capacity of 6.5 million TEUs.

The Italian-Swiss shipping company has 132 new vessels on order, with a total capacity of 2.06 million TEUs. This is more than Ocean Network Express’ entire fleet. O.N.E. is the sixth largest liner in the world.

If all the new ships are delivered without other vessels being taken out of service, MSC’s potential capacity could rise to a staggering 8.5 million TEUs.

With the demise of the 2M alliance and the emergence of a new global liner order, MSC is preparing to redefine the limits of scale in the world’s container shipping panorama.
