Escalation of the Middle East conflict

MSC stops Persian Gulf shipments

by Port News Editorial Staff

The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East has prompted MSC to suspend its  shipments to ports in the Persian Gulf

The shipping company announced it in a customer advisory, pointing out  that this measure also applies ‘to all empty containers that have already been released for stuffing and are intended for export to the above-mentioned destinations’.

Gianluigi Aponte’s group also announces that all shipments currently in transit will be diverted to the next safe port of discharge. “At that location, cargo will be discharged and placed at customers’ disposal for local delivery and recovery.”

All affected shipments will be subject to a mandatory surcharge of $800 per container to cover deviation costs. Finally, all expenses related to unloading — including, but not limited to, handling, storage, and any additonal charges — will be borne exclusively by and at the risk of the cargo.

If customers wish to have their goods forwarded to an alternative destination, a new transport booking must be made through the usual MSC agency channels.

“MSC sincerely regrets the necessity of this decision, which arises from exceptional circumstances beyond its control, and appreciates your understanding and cooperation during this time.”
