by Port News Editorial Staff

Aground off the coast of South Africa due to engine failure. It happened a few days ago to a Cosco Shipping oil tanker

The vessel, a 308,000-ton VLCC, experienced unidentified problems with its propulsion system while she was north-east of Port Elizabeth. Eyewitnesses pointed out that the vessel, which left Singapore on 10th May, was moving very slowly along the coastline.

A spokesman for the shipping company said that the 27 crew members are safe and have not suffered any injuries or concussions. Nor have there been any oil spills.

The South Africa Maritime Safety Authority has announced that it has already sent a tugboat, the Smit Syanda, to the location in order to refloat the tanker.
