The latest annual report produced by the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) reveals that 84 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships were recorded in Asia in 2022. The trend appears to be up 2% from last year.
65% of the total accidents recorded during the year (55 out of 84) occurred in the Strait of Singapore; nearly 10% more compared to the previous year.
Other incidents were recorded in Bangladesh (five attacks); Malaysia (two cases) and the China Sea (one incident). In contrast, the Philippines and Indonesia had four and 10 incidents, respectively.
Over the past sixteen years (2007 to 2022) piracy incidents have been up by an average of 11% while cases of armed robbery against ships have increased by 89%.
