Scorpio Tankers doubled its mega commission with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry last December, exercising its option for two additional LR2s equipped with scrubbers. This means it now has a total of 4 new vessels on order.
The Monegasque company made the announcement, adding that it had paid $68.5 million for each of the two new ships. This is significantly lower than the price agreed in the contract signed at the end of the year, which set the cost of construction of the first two units at $70.8 million each. Delivery of the vessels is scheduled for the third/fourth quarter of 2029.
Scorpio Tankers now has a total of 10 newbuildings on order. It has decided to renew its fleet, partly through selling its older vessels like the STI Goal and STI Gallantry, which went for $52.3 million each.
The company led by Emanuele Lauro currently manages a fleet of 91 tankers. In addition to the four LR2s commissioned from the Dalian shipyards, its orderbook includes four MR tankers due for delivery in 2026 and 2027, as well as two VLCCs expected to be ready sometime in the second half of 2028.
