Southampton will be the first British port to have a 5G network up and running. In fact, the port of call has signed an agreement with telecommunications host Verizon.
According to Telco, the network, which will be built together with Nokia, will be more reliable and secure than previous set ups. The 5G will allow Internet of Things to be fully developed, facilitating vehicle automation, new traffic monitoring systems and modern predictive maintenance systems.
5G trials have already been announced in the past by other UK ports, such as Belfast and Felixstowe. British Ports Association CEO Henrik Pedersen believes the collaboration between Verizon and Southampton will be a milestone in the industry for validating the development of state-of-the-art technologies
