by Port News Editorial Staff

CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited, the joint venture between Carnival Corporation (as minority shareholder) and China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) which will operate as a new cruise brand for the local market, finally sets sail.

The news of the transfer of the Costa Atlantica to the new company came out yesterday. The cruise ship will be based at the Shanghai Wusongkou cruise terminal and in the initial phase will be used on routes in Southeast Asia and Japan.

In addition to the Costa Atlantica, another vessel will leave the Costa Cruise fleet to join Carnival’s new Chinese joint-venture: the Costa Mediterranea, which will be delivered by 2021.

The company is also building two new 133,500 tonne ships at CSSC Shanghai Waigaoqiao shipyard, with technical and design support provided by Fincantieri.

The first ship will be delivered in 2023.
