Cybersquatting case

Mobile sues construction company

by Port News Editorial Staff

Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA), which manages the Port of Mobile, has filed a federal lawsuit against a private developer, Gulf Corp, currently engaged in building a 12 million m2 industrial park in Baldwin County, east of the Port of Mobile.

The accusation levelled at the construction company is that it intentionally registered a trademark very similar to the one used by the Port of Mobile, with the aim of misleading public and investors into believing that the construction project had been approved by the Port Authority itself.

The dispute concerns the use of the name ‘Port Alabama’, together with the website domain www.portalabama.com, which  resembles the Port Authority’s official domain, www.alports.com.
