Container spot freight rates still falling

Drewry’s latest report points out that freight rates in the spot market fell by an average of 1% on the previous week to $1,741 per forty-foot container.

Although 35% lower than the average of the last ten years (at $2688 per FEU), Drewry’s index, which analyses container freight rates on eight major routes to and from the US, Europe and Asia, is still 23% above 2019 levels ($1420).

Rotterdam-New York freight rates on were down 5% from last week, to $4530 per FEU, while New York-Rotterdam rates were down 4%, to $889 per FEU. Shanghai-Genoa shipping rates also decreased, down 1% on a weekly basis, to $2207 per FEU, as did Shanghai-Rotterdam freight rates, down 2%, to $1605 per FEU.

On the other hand, Shanghai – Los Angeles, Rotterdam – Shanghai, Los Angeles – Shanghai and Shanghai – New York rates remained the same as the previous week.

Drewry does not expect any new tariff reductions over the next few weeks on the east-west routes.
