Begin the project design phase for consolidating the second containment basin and the completion of Darsena Europa’s road and rail links. These are the priorities for the President of the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority, Davide Gariglio, speaking this morning at the Steering Committee meeting at the Prefecture convened by Prefect Giancarlo Dionisi.
After thanking the Prefect for setting up the Steering Committee (“which has the merit of coordinating the parties involved”), Mr. Gariglio highlighted the need to complete the whole project.
“We are well aware that the work is progressing rapidly, thanks to the coordination by Special Commissioner Luciano Guerrieri and the entire Port Network Authority,’ said the President of the Port Network Authority in his opening remarks
“According to the schedule, the first basin is to be consolidated by June 2027, while the dredging and breakwater construction work is set to be completed by October 2030. Pending their completion, however, the technical and economic feasibility studies (PTFE) for the consolidation of the second sludge containment basin, the completion of the railway links and the extension of the FIPILI to Darsena Europa have to start as soon as possible,” said the President, adding: ‘The sooner we have these projects, the sooner we can find out how much the work will cost. We will be able to start identifying the sources of funding needed to get them underway.’
Mr. Gariglio announced that he had received confirmation from the project’s special commissioner, Luciano Guerrieri, that he was willing to speed up the paperwork for preparing the procedures for awarding the PTFE contracts. “We absolutely have to get this work started, so that Darsena Europa can be completed,” the President urged Commissioner Guerrieri, after thanking him for his active support.
The president of the ports of Livorno and Piombino ended his speech by stressing the strategic importance of the new mobile bridge over the Scolmatore overflow canal, which will allow yachts and megayachts from the shipyards on the Navicelli Canal (which flows into the Scolmatore) to sail directly and easily out into the open sea. ‘‘It’s a fundamental project that we have to find the money for. It is out of the question that Darsena Europa’s operations should be compromised by this bottleneck. We must take decisive action to find the resources, calling on the support offered Minister Matteo Salvini during his visit to our port,” he concluded.
