Accident off Callao

Ever Lunar, 50 containers lost at sea

The list of Boxships losing cargo at sea is growing. Following the case of the Ever Liberal, Evergreen’s 8,400 TEU containership, which lost 36 containers off the coast of Japan last month while sailing from Busan to Los Angeles, three days ago another vessel operated by the Taiwanese shipping company lost some of its containers.

The Ever Lunar, a ship with a 7,000 TEU capacity lost 50 containers off the port of Callao, Peru, last Friday.

The Ever Lunar was anchored and waiting to enter the South American port when it suddenly began to roll violently, causing containers to fall into the sea.

No crew members on board were harmed, as the toppling containers were all located at the stern of the ship.

Evergreen attributed the rolling to several possible factors, including a tsunami caused by the recent earthquake in Russia, poor sea conditions in South America, or a sudden surge of waves.

An official at the port of Callao told the EFE news agency that the Ever Lunar was carrying around 7,000 containers with plastic products inside. The authorities have ruled out the possibility that the items that fell into the sea are hazardous and could cause pollution.

According to the World Shipping Council’s annual report, 576 containers were lost in 2024. This represents 0.0002% of the approximately 250 million containers shipped globally in 2024. The figure reflects the industry’s continued progress in safety and prevention.
