by Port News Editorial Staff

A  fire broke out on board an MSC container ship in the port of Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates. A seafarer suffered serious burns and was immediately taken to the nearest hospital.

What caused the fire has yet to be clarified. Video footage shot from a helicopter showed three tugs directing jets of water over the superstructure towards the stern.

The Panamanian-flagged MSC Rita was built in 2005 and has a capacity of just over 8,000 TEUs. The ship had moored in the Khalifa port on 6th June.
