Teamwork at Berlin’s Fruit Logistica

Livorno Cold Chain, when integration works

by Port News Editorial Staff

Once again, The North Tyrrhenian Port Network took part in Berlin’s Fruit Logistica, the world’s most important trade fair dedicated to the fruit and vegetable trade. From 4th to 6th February, it hosted 2,458 exhibitors from over 90 countries, confirming the growing interest in this sector.

Livorno and Piombino Port Network Authority (PNA) attended the event together with Amerigo Vespucci Freight Village, Darsena Toscana Terminal (TDT), Cold Storage Customs CSC) and Livorno Reefer terminal (controlled by Livorno Port Authority), hosted at the stand provided by ITA, the Italian Trade Agency promoting Italian companies abroad and their internationalization.

The PNA has put together a formidable team, reflecting Livorno’s importance in a market worth €17 billion in terms of national production in 2025.

The port of Livorno plays a key role in the perishable goods supply chain for the Italian and Southern European markets. It handles 140,576 tonnes of palletized fresh produce at Livorno Reefer Terminal’s specialized facilities and over 40,000 refrigerated containers, 28,779 of which at the Darsena Toscana Terminal and 6,850 at Livorno Reefer Terminal and 2,500 at Cold Customer Customs Vespucci.

The figures confirm the success of the Livorno Cold Chain project, an organizational model that, among other things, enables the automatic yard planning of goods flows, automation of quayside operations, remote monitoring of checking activities and a fast lane for picking up fruit and vegetables, facilitating full digital integration between the application for the automatic management of entry/exit authorizations for heavy goods vehicles at port gates (GTS3) and the platform for simplifying import, export and clearance procedures for goods from the terminal (the TPCS).

“The availability of dedicated facilities and warehouses is key to managing cold chains efficiently,” said Antonio Rognoni of the CPL Group, stressing the strategic importance of increasingly close cooperation between public institutions and the private sector. This collaboration has now been reinforced by the functional integration between Livorno Reefer terminal and CSC. Leonardo da Vinci terminal has taken over the operational management of the facilities located at Vespucci freight village. It is to be further consolidated in the near future through Livorno Reefer terminal acquiring a stake in CSC.

The aim is to create further synergies between operators and provide customers with high value-added services.

Full intermodal, digital integration and operational efficiency: this is what Livorno’s cold chain showcased in Berlin

“Expertise, organization, reliability, continuous investment in automation and systems integration, involvement of all stakeholders to ensure that the cold chain is managed in the most effective and efficient way possible. This is what we do, and it is the only way to meet user demands and consolidate our leadership in this field,” said TDT’s commercial director, Giuseppe Caleo, who highlighted how the Livorno-based company is a benchmark of excellence in the sector: “This allows us to be confident about further developments in the market,” he said, adding that “cohesion among operators is essential to satisfy the needs of our mutual customers.”

Claudio Capuano, Senoir PNA Promotion & Training executive, was also satisfied: ‘The event in Berlin once again confirmed how teamwork can really make a difference in an increasingly competitive market.”
