On the occasion of the general strike for Gaza, 2,500 demonstrators organized a protest this morning in the port of Livorno with the declared intention of obstructing the Slnc Savern, a vessel due to arrive between tomorrow and Wednesday, accused of transporting weapons to be sent to Israel.
The initiative, promoted by the Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) trade union, led around two hundred protesters to block Varco Valessini terminal gate for several hours, preventing cars and lorries from passing through. The Varco Donegani terminal gate was also partially obstructed, preventing lorries from entering but not ferry passengers.
“Everyone, whether they are union members or not, can take part,” says USB. From 6 a.m. and throughout the morning, there will be a picket line at the Valessini gate. No more arms trafficking in our ports. No more rearmament policies that take away financial resources for salaries, public services and welfare.”
Another protest at the Valessini gate is planned for Wednesday morning (24th September), again at 6 a.m. This is because “another ship loaded with weapons from Israel is due to berth in the port of Livorno,” according to Gruppo Autonomo Portuali di Livorno (Livorno’s Autonomous Dockers Group).
It is now up to the Prefect, whom the USB has asked to meet with.
