“Trade unions are essential stakeholders for this administration. We intend to constantly discuss all the challenging issues we will have to deal with, with them” said Special Commissioner Davide Gariglio during his first meeting with port sector trade union and union confederation representatives.
“With the 84/94 port reform law as our guiding light, we will see to safeguarding the quality of work in the port,” said Mr Gariglio at the beginning of the meeting, stressing that he intends to visit the port to see things first hand very soon.
“To really get to know the port, you have to have your boots on the ground,” he explained, “and I will be coming to the quayside soon to talk to everyone.”
The union representatives brought many issues to the table. In particular, the reconfiguration of the port’s temporary manpower agency (Livorno port’s Art. 17 category). A new call for tenders will have to be prepared in view of the authorization being about to expire, an issue Gariglio considers to be complex that will require discussions at ministerial level to start mapping out the path to follow.
Behind it all, the revision of port labour organization model, which the PNA hopes will look at the overall reorganization of port work, in view of maximizing efficiency.
To address these issues, the trade unions asked for the Partnership Body to be convened as soon as possible. They appreciated PNA’s willingness to set the date for the end of July.
“We need to work as a team to correct the shortcomings in the port work organization model. This is why we are making ourselves available to convene the Partnership Body as quick as possible. We all agree on the objectives to be achieved to fully recover our port system’s productive efficiency,” Mr. Gariglio concluded.
