Smart light tower relamping completed

Livorno port’s lighting gets smart

by Port News Editorial Staff

Livorno port’s lighting is now smart, sustainable and even more integrated with lighting control management systems. In fact, the relamping and smart sensor work on the light towers and pylons in the port’s public areas was completed a few days ago.

The contract, fully financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Next Generation EU Green Ports programme, coordinated by the  Ministry of the Environment & Energy Security, cost a total of €889,000 and was completed in 246 days.

The project was presented this evening in the Old Fortress, at a technical conference attended by Port Network Authority (PNA)  Special Commissioner, Davide Gariglio, and everyone who had worked on it: from the PNA’s senior technical manager, Enrico Pribaz, to site manager, Gabriele Madrigali, and project designer, Massimiliano Micheletti.

Two projects have been completed: replacing the traditional lightbulbs in the public lighting systems with the more efficient LED lighting, and installing a sensor and control system allowing them to be switched on only when necessary, thus saving a considerable amount of electricity.

Not only that, innovative technology called Light -Fidelity (LI-FI) was also installed in the lighting systems. This new system is cutting-edge. Among other things, it consents very secure data transmission, the elimination of any interference (as no radio frequency signals are used), geo-localized activation of LED light emissions, and a data transmission speed 100 times faster than WI-FI.

“Real change starts with small things,” said Gariglio at the opening of the conference, in his first participation in a public initiative promoted by the PNA. “This work addresses the need to make our Network ports even more energy efficient. This project is therefore fundamental, It is highly technological, in view of improving port security,” he explained, stressing  the added value of a dual initiative  that was financed with PNRR funds and which consequently had to respect tight completion deadlines.

“I would like to thank the staff at our PNA and the project designers who worked on implementing this project”
