An accident has occurred in the port of Long Beach involving the Mississippi, a boxship chartered by ZIM. Apparently, a stack of containers positioned in the stern bay and a second stack amidships on the starboard side collapsed.
The vessel had arrived on 9th September from the port of Yantian, China. Fortunately, the accident did not involve any crew members or port workers. No-one was harmed
The container toppling damaged a Stax- operated clean air barge. At least 67 fell into the sea.
According to local media, the accident was caused by a crane malfunction.
The US Coast Guard have cordoned off the area where the vessel is berthed – Pier G – and launched an investigation together with the Port of Long Beach Department.
