The municipality grants the land where electrical conversion cabin is to be built

Portoferraio’s cold ironing nearing completion

The deed was signed at a notary’s office in Livorno, It testifies that   Portoferraio municipality grants the North Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority the land where the electrical conversion cabin is being built. This cabin is necessary for completing  the cold ironing systems that will be used to power ships berthed at the Elba island port. This eliminates  environmental and noise pollution.

The project, now nearing completion, foresaw the construction of a distribution substation located in the city behind the port, in the area of the former Bricchetteria sports field, not far from the quays. The remaining part of the installations consists of ducts and cables between substations and shore power outlets, which are completely underground and not visible. The infrastructure also includes all the necessary shore-side power and data connection equipment. The electrification of quays will therefore enable ships to switch off their engines while in port by using energy supplied from shore.

Once  the formalities were completed, the president of the Port Network Authority, Davide Gariglio, and the mayor of Portoferraio, Tiziano Nocentini, had a brief meeting to discuss the work planned for the port of Elba. In particular they focused on the parking situation at the Residence. They plan to work together to purchase the area and  subsequently  transform it  into a facility suited to the needs of the port. Mr. Gariglio and Mr. Nocentini agreed to meet again in January on Elba to verify the progress and feasibility of the planned projects on site.
