Ship aground on the west coast of Newfoundland

Chilling rescue of MSC Baltic III crew

by Port News Editorial Staff

Last Saturday, the Liberian-flagged containership MSC Baltic III went adrift in a storm and ran aground near Lark Harbor, on the west coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland.

Two Leonardo CH149 Cormorant helicopters intervened to bring the sailors to safety. Some had been injured after the vessel violently hit the seabed. The air rescue operation was conducted in harrowing conditions, due to very strong winds.

Once the crew had been successfully airlifted, the rescuers’ attention then turned to the ship. Current salvage efforts are being conducted in coordination with MSC and a company hired to examine the vessel.
