Officer falls overboard off Taiwan

Seafarer has gone missing at sea

by Port News Editorial Staff

The chief officer who, on Monday, fell from the VIMC Sunrise, a bulk carrier sailing from Singapore to the port of Xiamen, China, is still missing.

Three other crew members fell into the sea along with the officer. They were still alive when rescued, although suffering from serious leg and arm injuries.

At the time of the accident, the ship was seven nautical miles off  the Taiwanese port of Mailiao. Once the seafarers were rescued, the VIMC Sunrise sailed to the port of Kaohsiung so the injured could be given proper medical assistance.

The search for the missing seafarer resumed on Tuesday after a brief interruption. At the moment, it is still unclear what caused the four men to fall into the sea.
