The consequences of new US ship levies

Seaspan to relocate HQ to Singapore

by Port News Editorial Staff

Seaspan, a major ship chartering company for leading shipping lines, will be transfering its registered office from Hong Kong to Singapore.

Several analysts believe that the shipowner’s decision has been influenced by the imminent application of new US levies on Chinese shipowners and vessels built in China.

Hong Kong is in fact a special Chinese regional administration although it retains a significant degree of autonomy.

By locating  to Singapore, the shipowner could benefit from reductions on Chinese ship surcharges.
