The new Zero Emission Port Alliance

Terminal operators’ green alliance

by Port News Editorial Staff

An alliance between terminal operators to accelerate the decarbonization of container handling operations, has been launched by APM Terminals and Dp World at Cop28 in Dubai.

The Zero Emission Port Alliance, which will start operating early next year, is open to all industry stakeholders, including terminal operators, equipment manufacturers, port authorities and government agencies.

The aim of the alliance is to promote the use of battery-powered electric vehicles for quay-to-yard container handling, with the clear intention of reducing emissions from port operations.

APM Terminals and Dp World stated that results show that it is now possible for battery-powered electric container handling vehicles to become just as, if not more, competitive than their diesel equivalents. They pointed  out that the alliance also intends to work to ensure that ports are equipped with the necessary shoreside electricity supply facilities.
