Drewry's analysis

Asian market spot rates skyrocket

by Port News Editorial Staff

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), a weighted average of weekly spot rates on 18 major intra-Asian trade routes, shot up 28% in the first week of April, hitting $865 per 40-foot container.

Rates are currently 29% higher than last year. This week-on-week (WoW) increase in the index is mainly driven by a surge in freight rates on the Shanghai–Jebel Ali route, due to the Middle East conflict.
