The fire that broke out on 10th April on the Ever Lenient, a 9,466 TEU containership operated by Evergreen and moored at the PSA Pasir Panjang terminal in Singapore, was brought under control after 20 hours of work.
The fire-fighting operations were coordinated by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), assisted by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the PSA terminal’s emergency response team. Vessels from the SCDF’s marine division, three MPA patrol boats and drones were deployed for overhead surveillance.
Despite being a potentially very serious incident, the aftermath is reassuring. Everyone on board was brought to safety; there are no reports of injuries.
The authorities have also confirmed that there have been no oil spills or marine pollution. The Pasir Panjang terminal has continued to operate as normal without any significant disruption to shipping.
An official enquiry is currently being carried out by the MPA to determine the cause of the fire. In the meantime, terminal staff are overseeing the unloading of the damaged containers to assess the extent of the damage to the cargo.
