Sea Intelligence report

Empty boxes up 20% from 2019

by Port News Editorial Staff

From 2019 to date, empty container movements have increased by 20% according to Sea Intelligence’s latest report. It points out that, overall, full container traffic has increased by 2.5% compared to 2019 and by 4.2% in relation to miles travelled.

Looking exclusively at head haul traffic, the number of TEUs increased by 7.8% in December compared to 2009 and by 8% in relation to miles travelled.

According to Sea Intelligence, the need to move empty containers has increased unquestionably more than the necessity to move full ones, with back-haul movements growing 2.5 times faster than head haul ones.

According to Sea Intelligence analysts, this means that the actual costs of moving head-haul traffic containers have risen significantly.
