MSC still leading reefer carrier

by Port News Editorial Staff

Having seen its fleet grow by 19.7 % over the last twelve months, MSC also strengthened its position as the liner with the highest capacity for transporting temperature-controlled containers.

The carrier now has 815 boxships with a combined total of 583,700 reefer plugs. MSC’s capacity dedicated to reefer container shipping has soared by 17.6% year-on-year.

Only Ocean Network Express (ONE) recorded a higher growth in the number of reefer plugs, up 23.1% on the previous year. The Japanese carrier increased its total fleet by 17.5%.

Instead, HMM is the only carrier with a lower reefer capacity than a year ago (-1.3%). The liner also reduced the overall capacity of its fleet by 2.4%.

The list of the top 10 carriers according to the  number of reefer plugs generally follows the total fleet capacity ranking. The only exception is ZIM, which, bottom in the top ten for overall fleet capacity, is in eighth place in the reefer sector. Its 130 ships are equipped with almost 77,700 refrigerated plugs.
