Delivery of the Jolly Argento

Ignazio Messina, full-container ships

by Port News Editorial Staff

Today Ignazio Messina & C took delivery of the ‘Northern Promotion’, renamed ‘Jolly Argento‘, in the Korean port of Busan.  This marks the beginning of the partial replacement of the fleet currently made up of container/Ro-Ro vessels with full-container ships.

The ship can transport up to 4600 TEUs. It is 264.32 metres long and 32.20 metres wide. It was built by the Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, which, between 2011 – 2013, had  also built the container/Ro-Ro vessels that have characterized the Genoese group’s fleet over the last decade.

The Jolly Argento is set to sail to the Chinese port of Guangzhou (Nansha Terminal Phase IV) to load 1350 40′ HC containers and 1,000 20′ boxes, which had just been specifically built for the company. Afterwards, the vessel is expected to head for Jeddah where she will unload most of these containers.  Then she will sail to Genoa to be put on the East-South Africa line in early October.

There are  23 crewmembers, including 17 Italians, under the command of Captain Caselli from Genoa.
