Decarbonization target

Ikea & Hapag Lloyd get eco-friendly

by Port News Editorial Staff

Hapag Lloyd has announced that it has joined forces with Ikea to support decarbonizing shipments from Asia.

Under the agreement – from March 2024 to February 2025 – the furniture giant is to use the Ship Green 100 option for its container shipments. This involves adopting biofuels, reducing CO2 emissions by around 100,000 tonnes.

“IKEA stands as one of  our most valued customers, known for its unwavering commitment to sustainability,” said Danny Smolders, Global Sales Managing Director at Hapag-Lloyd. “By joining forces, we are reducing CO2 emissions significantly,” he adds, pointing out that “Ship Green is an important part of our decarbonisation journey and brings us one closer to our goal of net-zero fleet operations by 2045.”

IKEA aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from product transportation by 70% by 2030 and to use only zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles and ocean vessels by 2040.
