Samsung Heavy Industries to invest $3.7m in Busan

Offshore engineering in Busan

A research and development centre in Busan, South Korea, focusing on offshore engineering. It will be built by the leading South Korean shipbuilder, Samsung Heavy Industries, by November on the basis of an MOU signed with the South Korean metropolitan city.

According to the main South Korean manufacturer, the $3.7 million investment is designed to  increase the group’s profitability by enabling it to acquire specific know-how in the construction of specialized units like LNG carriers or offshore plants.

The leading South Korean shipbuilder is strengthening its capabilities by building a  R & D centre concentrating on  offshore engineering in Busan.

The new facility will serve as a base for design and research in this specialized field and will collaborate with the group’s research and development facilities at the Geoje, Pangyo & Daeduk main shipyard.

SHI plans to start hiring at least 200 professionals a year from 2024. Experience in hull and structural design as well as electrical and equipment design will be required.
