Mitsubishi Corp initiative

Bulker selected for WindWings debut

by Port News Editorial Staff

The 80,962 dwt Pyxis Ocean bulk carrier will be Mitsubishi Corporation’s first vessel  to be fitted with Bar Technologies’ WindWings wind propulsion system, supplied by Yara Marine Technologies.

The announcement was made by the shipping company itself. Two sails will be delivered by Yara Marine and fitted on the bulk carrier.

The installation process , part-funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 CHECK project, and scheduled for early 2023, is the next step in a collaboration launched in 2019 between US company Cargill and Mitsubishi Corporation’s Shipping Singapore Branch, to increase energy savings and reduce emissions. The vessel will be charted by Cargill.

The companies stressed that this  initial deployment with two WindWings will propel them faster towards  the partnership’s  decarbonization target.
