According to Alphaliner’s latest report, April’s figures show trade between Europe and the two coasts of South America is largely dominated by four European shipping lines. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, A.P. Moller – Maersk, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd AG together account for 93.3% of total capacity.
COSCO SHIPPING and Ocean Network Express (ONE) are the only Asian carriers operating between Europe and the east and west coasts of South America, with a combined market share of 6.2%.
A total of 99 containerships are deployed on this route, with a 710,530 TEU capacity, representing 2.1% of the global total.
49 of these are used on routes between Europe and the west coast of South America (369,573 TEUs), whilst the remaining 50 operate on routes between Europe and the east coast of South America (340,957 TEUs).
The Geneva-based carrier MSC is now the leader on both routes, with a 38.1%. market share. Maersk is in second place with a of 26.3% one.
