Alphaliner Report

New containerships on the horizon

by Port News Editorial Staff

The world’s seas will soon be inundated with a surplus of new tonnage. This year as many as 89 container ships with a capacity of at least 7000 TEUs will come into service along the main east-west trade routes.

According to Alphaliner’s latest report MSC is the company with the heaviest orderbook.  In 2023 it will bring 19 Neopanamax ships (between 13 and 15,000 TEUs) and 14 Megamax vessels (from around 24,000 TEUs) into service. In 2024, in the last year of the 2M alliance, the Italian-Swiss company will be putting  23 Neopanamax ships  into service.

This is followed by Hapag Lloyd. After Aponte’s group company, the German carrier is the liner that will see its fleet expand the most, thanks to the addition of three neopanamax ships and six megamax vessels. In 2024, a further eight vessels will be added to the fleet.

ONE will instead be acquiring three NPX and five MGX ships in 2023 and 12 in 2024. In fourth position Cosco will be introducing  one NMX and six MGX vessels in 2023.
