It will dismantle up to 70 vessels a year

Oman to build ship recycling facility

by Port News Editorial Staff

Oman is to build a facility for recycling eco-sustainable ships in the north of the country.

The local newspaper Muscat Daily disclosed the news, pointing out that the new facility will be built in the Khatmat Malaha area, in northern Batinah.

A joint venture between the Arab state and the Jordanian company Green Wheel Recycling Middle East is to implement the project.

Once fully operational, the facility will be capable of dismantling and recycling over 70 vessels a year. It is expected to produce approximately 2 million tonnes of high-quality, low-carbon steel per year in its initial phase.

The project will also provide environmentally sustainable solutions to international shipping fleets that are facing legislative pressures, such as the EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong Convention, to adopt environmentally friendly recycling practices.

The facility is expected to create around 2,000 direct and indirect jobs and stimulate ancillary industries, including the production of environmentally friendly containers.
