Attack off Saudi Arabia

Saudi oil tanker hit off Yanbu

by Port News Editorial Staff

A Saudi-owned VLCC was hit 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu, in the Red Sea.

According to reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations Agency, a projectile is said to have struck the ship, causing a fire on deck.

All the members of the crew were rescued and there was reportedly no oil spill.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the ship was targeted by Yemeni rebel forces because it was linked to Saudi Arabia (the company that owns the Saudi-flagged vessel is Bahri).

As Splash 247 points out, after the Houthis announced the blockade of Saudi port traffic on 20th July, crude oil exports from Yanbu have fallen by over a third.

Saudi Arabia responded by rerouting  a number of VLCC cargoes northwards through the Red Sea, including partial unloading operations at the Egyptian port of Ain Sukhna.
