Demand up to 16 million tonnes/year by 2030

Shipping fuels, LNG shooting up

by Port News Editorial Staff

According to Shell, the global demand for LNG as a shipping fuel is set to hit 16 million tonnes per year by 2030, i.e. 60% more than the volumes handled between 2013 and 2023.

In its latest Outlook, it points out that 60% of the demand will be from containerships, followed by tankers and RO/ROs.

Shell expects over 170 million tonnes of new LNG to be available by 2030, catering for the increased demand.

The US will be the top supplier. Its production will be able to meet twice the demand for LNG from Japan and South Korea between now and 2030. Together the US and Qatar account for 60% of global LNG supply.
