On Thursday Iranian media sources reported that Tehran is reportedly considering a legislative proposal to impose transit fees for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
The proposal aims to impose a tax on maritime traffic in one of the world’s most critical oil transport routes, thereby exacerbating geopolitical tensions.
Iran’s Supreme Leader is reported to have described this initiative as part of a post-war ‘new order’ aimed at reversing the balance of power: Iran would go from being a nation subject to sanctions to a power capable of imposing sanctions on the West by restricting or blocking its access to the waterway.
The strait is considered to be “effectively closed” or subject to severe disruptions from the beginning of March 2026, due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.
