The port of Singapore is going for ammonia to reduce CO2 emissions produced by ships during navigation. In a recently published press release, the Energy Market Authority and the Maritime and Port Authority of the city-state announced that they had set up a consortium to continue research on the development of nitrogen trihydride as a form of energy for ship propulsion.
The consortium’s mission is to develop a preliminary design to enable Singapore to produce at least 100,000 tonnes of ammonia a year.
Singapore-based Keppel will operate the ammonia power plant, and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation will supply the marine fuel. Advario, based in the Netherlands, will operate the storage terminal if a final investment decision is made in the future.
