Mega order

COSCO invests $3bn in 18 new ships

by Port News Editorial Staff

The Chinese state-owned giant COSCO Shipping Holdings has just formalized a massive order for 18 boxships from its country’s shipyards, allocating a total budget of around 2.99 billion dollars.

The order book comprises twelve 22,000 TEU ships, fitted with LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) dual-fuel propulsion, ordered from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding at a price of $224 million each. They will be deployed on deep-sea routes between the Far East and north-western Europe, with delivery scheduled between 2028 and 2030.

A further six 3,200 TEU regional feeder vessels have been ordered from CSSC Huangpu Wenchong at a cost of $50 million each and intended to strengthen its regional links around the main hubs.
